Summary of Short Story : Bartleby, The Scrivener : A Story of Wall Street by Herman Melville

There was a lawyer who runs his law practice on Wall Street, New York. The lawyer was a succesful lawyer. To relieve the load of work in his office, the lawyer hires the scrivener. The scrivener’s name is Bartleby. Before intoducing Bartleby, the lawyer tells him that there was other employees who work in the office. The first is Turkey, He is a scrivener. turkey only work in the morning, he would make a problem if worked in he afternoon. Turkey worked in the afternoon only for less important documents. The second is Nippers, He is a scrivener too. He is a young man, an ambitious man. But Nippers contrary with turkey, he had a trouble to work in the morning. And the last is Ginger Nut, he isn’t a scrivener. He did cleaner, sweeper in the office. But Nippers and turkey often send him to take a cakes.

The lawyer felt that he needed additional help to relieve the load of work in his office. Then he hires Bartleby. A scrivener that might be more beneficially that turkey and Nippers. At first day of work, Bartleby did an extraordinary. He worked all day, in the morning and at night. After two days worked, Bartleby appeared unusual attitude. When the lawyer asked him to copy some documents, Bartleby refuse it and said “I would prefer not to”. The lawyer amazed by Bartleby’s answer. 

The lawyer ask anyting to do to Bartleby, but he still won’t do anything. As day passed on, The lawyer considered to reconcile Bartleby, he ask Bartleby some question to learn about how he become like that. But, Bartleby only said the same answer “I would not prefer to.” 

One Sunday, the lawyer want to go to church. He found himself walked through his office. And luckily he bought the keys. When he opened the door. What a surprised, The lawyer discovered that Bartleby live in the office on Suday morning. The lawyer’s mind full of curiosity. Bartleby should not be in the office on Sunday. He must have ate, dressed, aand slept in his office. And there was no plate, mirror or bed. But he found the evidences that Bartleby was live in the office. The lawyer thought, what a friendliness and loneliness appeared here. Every night of everyday in Wall Street is an emptiness. But Bartleby make his home in here, with full of solitude. And for the first time in his life the lawyer felt so melancholy. 

The lawyer decided to move out and relocating his entire bussiness and leaving Bartleby. But Bartleby stay. The new tenants ask the lawyer’s help to bring Bartleby out from the office, Bartleby sat on the stairs and sleeps in the front building’s door. The Lawyer visits Bartleby. Feeling desperate, The lawyer asked Bartleby to come and live with him at his own home. Bartleby still said, "would prefer not to."

Finally, The lawyer got news that Bartleby has removed to the tombs. Then the lawyer visits him and the lawyer met Turnkey, he is a chef in that Tombs and asked him to give more attention to Bartleby to make sure he didn’t starved. A few days later, the lawyer visits Bartleby and discovered that Bartleby has died caused by starvation, he preferred not to eat.

Sometime afterward, the lawyer heard a rumor that Bartleby had worked in a dead letter office, in Washington, but he had lost his job there. The lawyer thinks that The Dead Letters are have made anyone of bartbleby’s temprament sink into an even darker gloom, into the hopeless.

"Maaf aku tak bisa." Ucap Tara malam itu kepada sahabatnya, tepat saat mereka sampai di depan pagar rumah Tara.
